WHY WE'RE SUCH FANS OF WIND
In 2014, Mars, the family business which makes M&M’s®, became the first U.S. member of RE100, a global collaboration between influential businesses committed to using 100% renewable electricity, as well as promoting demand for and delivery of it. Mars joined RE100 because we believe that renewable energy is the future.
We’re holding ourselves accountable by setting measurable goals—including a goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions from our direct operations by 2040.
And we’re making good progress. In 2016, 36% of our global electricity was from renewable sources, and 89% of that renewable energy came from wind power. Mars purchases enough wind power to cover the electricity needs of over 70,000 U.S. households—the equivalent of the energy needed to make all of the M&M’s® in the world.
WHAT MAKES WIND POWER SWEET
Lots of things! Wind produces the energy for electricity with zero air pollution or carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. Wind is free, inexhaustible and available in many regions around the world. More than 100 countries now produce wind energy.
Wind energy is also good for business, as it helps to create thriving communities. There are now more than 100,000 wind energy-related jobs in the United States and the fastest growing job in 2016 was wind turbine technician. Around the world, renewable energy is responsible for 9.8 million jobs. Not only is renewable energy green, it helps people make more green!
WHY WIND MATTERS TO US
Because it’s awesome. But seriously, sustainability isn’t optional. We believe the only option is to become fully sustainable, both for the health of our planet, as well as the long term success of our business.
Consumers are rightly expecting brands and companies to have a positive impact on our planet, and to be a force for good. With this campaign, we want to share with consumers what we’re doing to shift towards renewable energy.
Most importantly, we believe that the more people know about sustainability, the more change will happen. The United Nations has invited everyone to talk about the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and make them famous, and we’re just doing our part. M&M’S® + WIND = THE PERFECT RECIPE
OUR WIND FARM FRIENDS
What do Lamesa, Texas and Moy, Scotland have in common? Well, the majority of our wind energy comes from two large-scale wind farms in those towns, which we have supported through agreements to purchase the renewable electricity they generate.
We’ve also got another project in the works: a new wind farm in Mexico that will provide equivalent wind power to the electricity needed for our operations in that country. Plus, we’ll continue to increase our renewable energy usage, to meet our goal of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from our operations by 2040.
